THERMA-TRU WINS GREEN AWARD
Maumee, OHIO, (Sept. 1, 2009) - Door and Window Manufacturer (DWM) magazine recently recognized Therma-Tru with a Green Award in the door manufacturer category. This first-time award recognizes suppliers and manufacturers who are placing an emphasis on sustainability and doing their part to conserve resources and produce less waste.
The nominations for the award were publicized in the July-August issue of DWM, where readers were encouraged to go to their Web site to vote. There were seven categories, including large to small-sized manufactures, window manufacturers and door manufacturers. A profile was included for each of the nominees, providing background for readers.
“The amount of people who voted was significant and more than we’ve ever received for anything we’ve opened up to reader voting,” said Tara Taffera Editor/Publisher, DWM Magazine. “I would say this definitely signifies the growing interest and commitment of many door and window companies toward environmental sustainability.”
According to Taffera, more and more companies are recognizing the importance of sustainability, but many companies have been doing it long before people starting talking about being green.
“We wanted to recognize efforts made by these companies and the awards were a great way to do it. We look forward to continuing the annual awards each year,” Taffera said.
Therma-Tru has been practicing sustainability for over 25 years when the Company introduced the industry’s first fiberglass entry door, and has since provided energy-efficient products as well as manufacturing processes and corporate policies that reflect responsible environmental and community consciousness.
“We are very proud to have been recognized for our green initiatives by others in the door and window industry,” said Sara Theis Alcroft, Brand Manager for Therma-Tru. “Therma-Tru is always looking for product materials or manufacturing processes that limit our impact on the environment.”
More durable and energy efficient than wood doors, fiberglass doors offer five times the insulation of wood due to their CFC-free polyurethane foam core.
Therma-Tru doors are also designed as a complete system with components that work together, ensuring a tight seal and additional energy savings. As most doors are ENERGY STAR qualified and NFRC Certified, homeowners can save money on energy costs and protect the environment through superior energy efficiency.
Therma-Tru also works with several waste management organizations to recycle products such as paper, plastic, cardboard, steel, propane canisters, wood, cut-outs and scrap doors. Almost 100 percent of the steel scrap from Therma-Tru manufacturing facilities goes to recycling centers.
In addition, many of the wood products used in Therma-Tru’s door frame components come from managed forests by partnering with wood suppliers who meet sustainable forestry certification standards. Since fiberglass doors serve as an energy efficient alternative to wood doors, Therma-Tru doors are able to capture the look and feel of high-end wood products without harvesting endangered wood species like Honduran Mahogany.
